Spend a few minutes explaining the Believing Game in your own words. How is it related to the Doubting Game? What does Elbow mean by believing as a game?
The Believing Game asks you to try on another person's thoughts or ideas before completely writing them off as incorrect or idiotic. Only by putting yourself in another person's shoes can you find the truth in your own beliefs or ideas. If you never test out another way of thinking, then how do you know if you're right? The Believing Game is interdependent with the Doubting Game, which looks for the truth in something by looking for an error in it. A person can not participate in one game without participating in the other. Elbow refers to believing as a "game" because the act of trying out another persons' ideas isn't a permanent thing. It's not like your ideas will actually change if you're only pretending that they will.
The believing game is forcing yourself to think positively about someone or something in which you loathe. It isn't asking you to change any of your beliefs but just to try and think differently about something or someone that you have felt and thought about in the same negative light so strongly for however long. The doubting game is different from the believing game in the sense that you are trying to find errors or flaws in the person that support your feelings and not the other way around. Elbow is calling it a game because that's exactly what it is. Trying something out as if you were playing with the idea but not taking it as a reality.
The believing game allows us to understand things through someone else's point of view. Normally, when we disagree with someone, we automatically begin playing the doubting game. If we take a moment to switch gears, however, and genuinely try to believe what the other person believes, it may help us to understand their motives. Elbow puts it into simple terms by quoting Terullian. "I believe in order to understand".
Elbow suggests that if you try believing as a game, you can believe anything and everything. The better you get at the game, the better you will understand.
The believing game is way to try out a new, usually opposing, viewpoint. When playing the believing game, instead of doubting and picking apart the opposition, you try to rationalize their actions. Putting yourself in their shoes may help you to uncover their true nature or motivations, and just maybe it wasn't as bad as you thought all along. The doubting game is the believing games evil twin. It is the negativity and apprehension you feel towards a certain thing. You doubt when you side against, but believe when you align with. The "game" is playing with the idea you agree with something, when in reality you don't. It's a short moment where we can play "believer" with no real consequences.
Well, since I added this class 5 minutes before it started, I have not yet read Elbow's explanation of the Believing Game. However, after the thrilling Disneyland story, I can guess as to its meaning. I would say that the Believing Game is a state of mind employed by individuals to assist them through the fantasy which is before them. Whether this fantasy is literal make-believe as in Walt Disney's creation, or some utopian adventure provided by a politician, the Believing Game is what we all enter into in order to buy what is being verbally sold to us. Rhetorical masterminds are pros at twisting the minds of the masses and thus attempt to control the Believing Game. The Believing Game seems as though it would be a cynic's nightmare, as you must put aside your doubts in order to trust in the facade.
The believing game is about, rather than thinking negatively about someone else’s idea (or rather, doubting everything they say), thinking more positively (that is, considering their viewpoint based on what they might mean, their reasons for coming to their ideas, etc.).
When Elbow says believing as a game, I think he just means that he’s not saying that you should totally change your beliefs, he means that, if just for a little bit, you should consider the other person’s point of view and how they came to it, so that you aren’t throwing away a valid point because you haven’t considered how it came to be. Also, if you think about it as a game, trying to imagine that you agree with something you loathe isn't quite as, well, loathsome.
The purpose of the believing game is to practice putting yourself in someone else's shoes. Everyone's point of view is different and by trying to understand someone else's point of view you might be able to better understand that person and their beliefs, even if you don't fully agree with their beliefs. Practicing the believing game could overall make a person happier.
The believing game is a way to see an opposing side of an argument in a different way instead of just saying that the other side is wrong and to doubt that the side is correct. so the believing game is taking the opposing argument and believing it full heartily so that their side could be better understood. The believing game relates to the doubting game by being the exact opposite of ideas. In the doubting game the idea is that the opposing side is wrong and to doubt them means that they could not possibly be correct. Were the believing game is the opposite as the idea is to accept everything that the opposing side is saying as truth so that it is better understood. This happens by seeing where the opposing side is coming from and to understand why it is that they believe their argument to be true. So if the opposing side’s motive is clear for why they believe what they do then it would be more concrete to why their side is the one that isn’t right. It is a game because it is something that the player has to actively do.
First and foremost I think what helped me to understand the believing game is that it involves actually believing- not guessing and believing means more then just abandoning doubt. Through history we have the tendency to doubt, which can be largely attributed to our following of the experimental method. We can justify the believing game by understanding that there is no real truth- meaning can vary from place to place and new meaning can be created. This helps us to believe by knowing that just because someone has another idea does make it right or wrong- there is not always one finite truth or answer. The believing game means being constantly open to ideas that are new and different and looking for the positives within these truths. The believing game is opposite of the doubting game but the two games are both complementary and beneficial. However, you cannot do both simultaneously. This is where is becomes important to understand what Elbow means by believing as a game. He means that this is something we have to consciously work at by trying to share perceptions and experiences and also the believing game includes following rules like any other game. Seeing it as a game allows you to switch gears between the doubting and believing game.
Blog 1: Believing game In my opinion, I think that the believing game is very beneficial. I feel as though it allows you the opportunity to grasp different ideas and learn many different things that you would have never learned before. I feel this way because the believing game forces you to leave the negativity behind and honestly put yourself in another perspective. Allowing yourself to be more open minded and trying to understand a certain subject in a whole different light can maybe shape your opinions on the subject in a different way or even stronger in the way that you felt before. But, most likely I think that it helps you realize why some of the things are the way they are, and it does not always have to be so negative. I really like how Dr. Talinn Phillips explained the example of her playing the believing game at Disney. I agree with her, that once she was able to play it and put herself more so in the creator’s shoes, she found she was not so negative. It did not completely change her opinion on the person or the whole idea of Disney, but it did help her learn from a different aspect that she never let herself see before she played the believing game.
To me, the believing game is a way to understand an issue, a situation, a person better not by doubting and discrediting but by finding truth. The believing game relates to the doubting game in the sense that they are opposites. The doubting game is what most are familiar with. In the game of doubt, error is being sought out, rather than with the believing game where truth is sought to better understand. A game is something that is played. When Elbow refers to believing as a game, it symbolizes playing along with the other view point to better understand it.
I interpret the “Believing Game” as a mechanism that we utilize in order to justify an unknown idea or concept. I feel that humans are naturally inclined to doubt the unknown, which can be scary. Determining whether or not to accept a certain objective creates an internal struggle, adding stress and uncertainty to the developing perspective. By looking at the objective from a different standpoint, we are able to further make sense of it, therefore acquiring peace of mind.
I consider the believing game a strategy for critical and, theoretically, less-biased exploration of a given subject. In reference to the introduction from "Microstyle", an alarming increase in unprofessional and uneducated opinions are published online based on the notion that single flaw can disprove any argument. By pointing out singular and possibly irrelevant details the writer fails to recognize that which may be true. In short, one flaw cannot reasonably disprove every argument. The believing game forces the reader or listener to actively consider every detail in an argument to better understand the point of view without discrediting the work unjustly due to an exaggerated assumption.
Through the reading I now better understand the believing game. It is simply to put yourself in someone else’s shoes to better understand their decisions and beliefs. This game is challenging because it forces you to overcome the issues that you may have with this person or organization. The believing game has a great outcome that may change a persons view so that they understand the person or organizations better. This is not meant to change someone’s opinion, it is simply just meant to make you think outside the box and explore different options. This game can be very beneficial to those who take advantage of it.
Reading this paper opened my eyes to see what Elbow was talking about . He says that the Believing Game is to look though the eyes of the other person. to understand somthing or someone , one needs to ok at there point of view. I agree, to understand or know why people believe what they do, we need to look at it there way.
I believe that the believing game can create a more exciting life and more open minded reality. Although having the ability to believe instead of doubt can create a possible falsification, we can create better possibilities for ourselves and the people around us. This is sort of like the Self Fulfilling Prophecy I learned in one of my communication classes. This is the idea that if you believe you can do something it is more likely to happen then doubting yourself. When people tell you that you are capable of something then you start to believe that. With the believing game you are more persuading yourself to believe instead of doubt. The more you believe ideas are possible the more you put yourself out there. This can help make a more happy and spontaneous life for yourself and your peers.
The Believe game is an activity, which makes people to consider things in different ways. Since each person has his or her own way to consider situations, the believe game helps people to see the situation from the other side. In addition, the Believe game provides a chance for people to think in their enemy’s shoes. However, my job taught me that we do not really have enemies; we just work for different goals. Considering other people’s feeling is important in work places. People have to tack care both of their co-workers’ and their competitors’ situations. In this way, people could make the best decisions. Considering about the competitors’ situation helps people to understand their competitors and find out the reason for their actions. Furthermore, it helps people to predict their competitors’ next movement. Both of the Doubting Game and the Believe game make people to consider things in more than one way. When something happens, people should see both the positive and the negative of it. In China, we have an old proverb that lost something may not always a bad luck. It means that when something happens, no one knows what it will lead in the future. The bad beginning not certainly leads a terrible ending. In addition, there are very few things only have positive side or negative side. When people consider in more than one way, they may easier to see the consequence of their decisions. On the other side, almost nothing can stand along. The consequence of one case always relates other cases. Things could get worse and worse if people have not considered every possible consequence. Elbow in the Believe game means in the game people should consider all of the two side of something. Even the two sides have some conflicts.
