No Apology: Believe in America

Some questions to think about now that you've finished the beginning of Romney's book (and are about to watch his speech):

How does Romney open this book? What are the images and ideas that he begins with? What kinds of things does Romney reveal about himself, his personal life? What does the purpose of the book seem to be—not just “elect me” but elect him for what reasons? What kind of case is he trying to make so far in this book? Or, another way of thinking about it is what are his main criticisms of Obama? How has Romney built (or harmed) his ethos thus far?

  1. Romney opens his book by discussing how creators of large corporations such as Wal-Mart, Apple, and Microsoft have lived up to the "American dream" through their innovation and savvy business-sense. He compares the experiences of these men to that of his father and himself but also states that none of these men achieved what they had by letting others simply hand them things. Romney describes how all of these men, including him and his father, worked very hard to get all the great things they earned in life. In the first chapter, Romney also seemed to spend a lot of time talking about international business and world politics including what other countries are doing to try and come out ahead of America. He seemed to spend more time discussing business rather than politics, and he also seemed almost as if he was trying to strike a fear in his audience that every other country in the world was "out to get" America.

  2. Romney opens this book with a discussion of innovators in business- starting with Sam Walton of Walmart. This is highly relatable and he uses this to begin discussing American ideals and the economy. He also explores a lot of American history and the history of our government- which appeals to a sense of Patriotism while also pointing out how Obama is not supporting these age old ideals. Romney reveals a lot of his views about how a free economy is supposed to function and how socialism and communism have always failed. He also discusses that America is on a route to failure and that Obama is pushing towards socialism while also repeatedly apologizing for America instead of "building us up". Mitt Romney does not discuss a whole lot about his personal life but he does refer to growing up comfortably and watching his father succeed in the "traditional American way". He also throws in some of his accomplishments including references to the companies he has worked for and the different Olympics that he helped with. He seems to be saying "elect me so that I can save America and make sure we dont turn into a socialist economy at the mercy of other countries". He also somewhat seemed to be instilling fear in people in his reference to the other countries tactics at becoming the best in the world and bringing America down. I think he is building a good case for himself when it comes to people who hate Obama and are not happy with our current economic state but I also think he is playing off of fear a lot and this was somewhat off-putting to me.

  3. Mitt Romney opens his book by referring back to the founding fathers and their quest of "freedom", which he continues referring to when criticizing the current state of Washington's politics. He uses ethos to continuously refer to the people as a collective group of victims that don't benefit from Congress's financial policies spanning the past four years. A specific example in his own words states, "the rue of law was ignored in order to reward the auto workers union at General Motors". I feel that the focus of the book is for him to prove his own knowledge of the problems in our country today. He skims issues of foreign policy and other free markets claiming that Obama positively influences other country's policies that are ultimately anti-American. I feel that the main goal of Romney's book is to establish himself as an intellectual who pays close attention to all aspects of world and domestic politics.

  4. Romney opens this book by talking about Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart and how he built this business starting with an innovation and what exactly what it was that he wanted to portray. He talks about how Walmart reflects exactly what Sam Walton was and his personality and that because he was from a land of opportunity and prosperity he was able to create this dream of his even if people doubted his abilities. He continues to talk about our economy and how to make our economy in the way it was before we have to have these free enterprises and be able to allow these small businesses to grow.
Romney reveals that his family may have started off poor but even as he grew up his parents were worried that if he came from a family that was profitable how he was going to know what hard work was all about. He reveals that his father always had the kids doing chores no matter how much money they had because it showed them what hard work and labor is all about and how it is the backbone of everything we do.
The book seems to say elect him because he believes in America and will not apologize for all that we have and all that we do as Obama seems to do. He's trying to make the case that he is an able candidate and that he wants to make America stronger because a strong America means a safe and better world for everyone.

  5. Romney opens his book by recalling a trip to Walmart. I'm sure that this piece of information was placed strategically at the beginning of the book to convince readers that Mitt is just like the rest of us. He describes the Walmart scene in detail and then goes on to elaborate on the interworkings of other American businesses. He also reveals a lot of his family history, including the not so picturesque parts of his childhood. Romney lists what needs to be changed regarding enterprise in our country, and also touches on his plans to change them.

  6. Romney opens his book, No Apology, by talking about Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart. He goes on to talk about many different corporations and their American founders. He reveals a bit about his background, but doesn't get too personal. He talks about his family and the "hardships" they've faced. Romney talks a lot about being proud of America. He also bashes "liberals" and Obama quite a bit, saying they want to turn the U.S. into a socialist country. From what I have read so far, it appears that Romney's main point in his campaign is that he will restore America to its former glory in the world, and bring back economic stability.

  7. Romney opens his book in a very interesting manner. I think he did great at grabbing the attention of his readers. He started off by using examples of other founders and their products. For example, he used Walmart and relating the founder of Walmart, Sam Walton, to the products that make up Walmart. Romney states how Sam Walton has many similar characteristics to the store Walmart. He goes on with this theory using Microsoft as well as Apple. Romney starts to use personal experience by adding in the time he met Walt Disney. Romney also speaks about himself by Finally, Romney ties it all together and wonders about the founders of America. How brave they were to come over sea and take a chance on the unknown. From the start Romney applies the No Apology aspect of the book. He says that we should not apologize for our freedom or independence, but rather embrace it. By embracing it, he wants us to embrace it in a positive way. Also, Romney gives us a little insight on himself and personal experience. He does this by speaking about how hard of a worker he is and the business with his father and what he has learned from that. He also starts the book off by describing how important it is to believe in America and why. He goes personal about how and why he believes in America as well.

  8. Romney opens his bok by talking about Corporate America. He focuses on the owners of all these companies and how they have influenced how America runs. Going into chapter one you can see that he is trying to focus on how individuals make up this country and that we should all have a say in how it is run. I personally thought that the quote "The culture and character of America reflects the nature and convictions of the men and women who founded it". He gives the example of hard working americans, specifically his father and grandparents. He describes the struggles they faced and how he, as President can help other Americans going through similar situations.

  9. Romney opens his book No Apology with a quick bashing of how the government has been run in the past four years and how Barack Obama has very socialist agendas against rich people. The images and ideals he uses to convey his messages are that of the American beliefs that are ingrained in most of America. These include relating himself very bluntly with the founders of America by saying he knows how John Adams felt. This is supposed to show that he is better suited to run the country then his opponent however how I read it this seemed a poor taste for him to say he would be able to tell what someone two hundred years ago would feel like leaving behind his wife when in todays world Romney would be able to talk to his wife at an moment through the internet or the use of a cell phone. The purpose of the book seems to be not just “elect me” but “elect me because I’m better then the other man because I’m awesome.”

  10. Romney opened his book by talking about corporations that played a big role in the American economy. He also went to detail about the individual people who started up these corporations, and how their innovation in their drive to succeed created companies, such as Walmart, Apple, and Microsoft. The ideas that Romney starts out explain talking about in chapter 1 is the idea of hard work. He goes on talking about his family life and how hard work and dedication made him. Also he tries to appeal to the lower to mid income range Americans by saying that he walked in their shoes, and that he was not born with a golden spoon in the sand but he had to work to where he is today. It seems that Romney wrote this book not just to get elected but to share his ideas and beliefs and what America should become. Also he discusses how he'll Change the Way America is, and put them back on top and become once again the world superpower. The case that Romney is trying to make is that America is not the world superpower and should be, and how there are other countries and groups to put America down and not succeed. He seems to hate the fact that Obama is not trying hard enough to move America forward to becoming a independent country.

  11. The images and ideas that he begins with are visuals that the everyday person considers and encounters on a daily basis. When reading it he paints a picture in my mind of me thinking about healthcare and the economy and how they are currently working in a poor manner.

The purpose of the book seems to be how he can relate to many Americans and understands the struggles everyone is going through. He obviously doesn’t just come out and say elect me but by being relative to his potential voters and outlining the main areas that need to be fixed. The case he is trying to make in this book is how we can get back to the American way and start becoming the world renowned power that we once were. America was once the place where you could fulfill your dreams and lately that idea has been farfetched and nearly almost impossible.

His main criticisms of Obama are taxes, jobs, and healthcare. He doesn’t like how Obama care has been implemented and the direction that is going in. Romney doesn’t like how Obama was promising all of these jobs to be created but by doing it in a way that takes away other jobs at the same time. Raising taxes to people that are currently making less than they were years ago while the cost of living has increased.

Romney has built up his ethos just by the way he carries himself and the vibes that he presents. He brings about a great presence and strong voice that provides people as a likeable guy that can do well for them and the entire country. I feel that he has outlined a great path to take and implement to future voters and with his background he can lead us back to a position of power and opportunity.

  12. Mitt Romney's No Apologies starts out with the entire concept of trying to connect with everyone. He shows that he is a big family man, even the book is dedicated to his family and the family he does not have yet. A lot of people concern for voting is so that America is better for there family, this established the connection that he is also looking out for his loved ones which creates a comfortable bond. Romney also talks about freedom. He recognizes that we as American's have the right to be free, which is what makes us America, the best country in the world. He as an very religious person still believes in the freedom of religion which shows that accepts peoples personal lives which is a big part of being a president. He takes freedom and turns it into several different major categories. One of which is free enterprise. He believes everyone should have the change to be successful for themselves. Everyone has the right to try and accomplish there goals in life. This is also something that everyone understands. Americans are dreamers. We want to be able to do the things we love, and he shows that it is a very important part of being an American. This also falls under his thought of having free opportunity. Romney being the family man that he is says believing in American means providing for a better future. We all have our great memories from our lives that we will never forget. We share these experiences with the people we love and share the experiences with and we are so grateful for that. When it comes down to it though when we pass away those memories do to. The one thing that we leave behind that matters is our family and we want our family to be able to live greater lives than we did our selves. This is a very touching part of Romney’s campaign and that is why people will trust him and listen to what he says. He makes people feel connected and we like to know that the person leading us is not just leading us, but among us.

  13. Mr. Romney start his book by recall his childhood. He said that his hate to weed when he was a child. Then he explained the reason for his father to ask him to do some work. He wants people to know that his family educated children well. He is a person have a good upbringing. On the other hand, he also wants people to know that his family also had difficult time. He wants to show that he knows how important the hard working is. In addition, he knows how to face the difficult time. He shows the public that he is the person who knows how to develop a company and develop United States’ economy. He wants to make himself close to normal people. However, Mr. Romney also points out that President Obama is not a business man; so that, he does not know how to run a company and does not understand how important those companies are. Thus, Obama cannot solve the economy problem in the U.S.
