Inquiry Presentations

Choose one of the presentations from today and write a response to it. You might choose the one that you found most interesting, most aggravating, or perhaps the one that you just really want to have a conversation about.

Your post might address the strengths or weaknesses of the argument or other points that weren't mentioned. You should also mention why you chose to respond to this particular presentation and not another.

  1. I found the ‘Technology Addiction’ is the most interesting topic for me. I think cell-phone and internet become problems because people never count these technologies can be problems. In fact, people depend on their cell-phones and computers too much. When a new technology appears, people follow the trend; they use it, love it, and depend on it. I think the strength of the argument is that people do depend on cell-phones and internet too much. The “Technology Addiction” is affecting humans before people found out what happened. However, I think the social also changes because of new technology. People use computer instead of note-books, save every document in mobile hard disks, set up electronic documents and pass them online. Therefore, even some people do not want to depend on the technology, the social will push them to do that. For instance, we have to enroll classes online; if the system has problem, can do nothing for solve the problem.
I am more interested in this topic than the other two because I heard lots of stories about use cell-phone and internet in offices. Some companies do not allow employees use their cell-phones during work time, some others believe employees use cell-phones and internet can bring benefit for companies. Actually, my friends and I have total different experience about using cell-phones in offices. One of my friends told me that her boss took every employee’s cell-phone and gave them back to employees when the day finished. However, it caused a big problem on one day. When the boss heart attacked out of the company with two of her employees, none of them had a cell-phone. Thus, the two employees cannot call the first add for help and the boss almost die. I do not think I will not work for a boss like this one. Cell-phone is the tool for people calling help during the emergency; the boss never considers about her employees’ security but only wants those employees to work for her. In this story, the boss hurts herself because her cell-phone rules in office. However, if an employee gets hurt or loses his or her life because the boss takes employees’ cell-phone, it is no difference with murder.
Fortunately, my boss never asked employees to stay away from our cell-phones or internet. He said that the first important was the safe work environment. On the other side, he believes that employees may also use their cell-phones work for their companies. In my case, phones in my office were not enough for the busy days. When the two telephones were using, my co-works could texting me if they had something important. In addition, personal relationship is important for companies. Employees should be allowed to use cell-phones and internet during work time; they could keep in touch with friends who may help their business.
In conclusion, I think the argument could mention that some people did not choose to use the new technology positively; they are pushed by the social changes. In other words, the social changes are required people to use and depend on new technologies, no matter if they want to.

  2. I found the presentation about technology addiction to be really interesting! It is something that I feel we hear a lot about nowadays and that many people experience, so I think it is a really great topic to inquire about. I actually went to the reStart website and took the Technology Addiction Quiz. I found out that I am considered to be an “average online user,” which surprised me because sometimes I think I am online too long although I am usually doing schoolwork.

One of the major strengths of her argument was that she included plenty of facts and figures to back up her statements. With something that some people may not agree with, I think it is important to include numbers that can help solidify your argument. I especially enjoyed the part about the “phantom vibrations” because that is certainly something I have experienced, but I never related it to technology addiction. I wonder if it is possible to feel these “phantom vibrations,” but not actually be addicted to technology? When we had our phones taken away throughout the presentation, I didn’t feel anxiety about not having my phone, so I wonder if feeling those vibrations means I’m addicted even though I don’t feel anxiety over not having my phone. It would be interesting to find something similar to “phantom vibrations,” like some other physical manifestation of technology addiction to include in the argument. Something else to consider and maybe include in her argument would be psychological disorders related to playing video games. So much research has emerged lately linking addictive playing o video games to things like excessive rage during and after playing games, fatigue while not playing games, skipping school or work to play games, and many other things. I think video game addiction would be an interesting thing to include since it’s a part of technology addiction and would supply more data to back up her argument.

  3. I found the technology addiction presentation to be the most interesting. She had a lot of facts to back up what she was saying and I thought by having us all put our phones in the bowl that she was making a good point about what a technology addiction was. Not that any of us are addicted to our phones or anything, but we all rely on them so much.
Along with the facts that she had to support her argument, I found the idea of the ‘phantom vibrations’ very interesting since I know I have them and I know other people who have experienced them as well. I had no idea it was an actual phenomenon and that there was a name for it, I just thought it was simply from walking with my phone in my pocket. I liked that at the end of her presentation she included the resources for where you can get help for your technology addictions, even though it requires the use of the internet, but what doesn’t anymore? Overall I think the presentation was great and that it was very informative, it also makes you stop and wonder if we are addicted to our technology or if it is just a part of our world that we are growing with.

  4. Presentation or topics that I enjoyed was the abortion one. I feel that this is a strong topic today and many people have their opinions and strongly of agree and disagree with this topic. I feel that it's important to know this topic to the fact that the does play such a large role in society today. It's all over the news that's what one of the presidential topics that they have to deal with. I like this idea, but the presentation or the wave of those presented was okay but not great. There are a few more different strengths and weaknesses that could have been added to this presentation to strengthen the opinion, or to get the message across to the viewer. One strength I could added to this presentation was be he could have used more studies and research that shows how abortion has increased over the years. Or some kind of graph or chart that shows the influence of abortion. Another strength that he could've used was how religion plays a role of abortion. He could write both positive and negative effects that religion has on this decision. A positive one would be that life is life shouldn't take life away at any cost, while a negative one would be it's okay to give abortion if the victim was raped or the woman will die giving birth. Finally he could've also mentioned how it affects victims psychologically and mentally of giving of abortion. So be good. To see how people take abortion after the habit and the decisions they make after, it will be interesting to see if the female the government abortion but I live a second thought about it again. The negative side of this presentation was the there wasn't any graphs are very much visual. To grasp and understand the concept which is hard to take seriously. I choose this article in response because it's a topic that is very popular in today's time and it's very important that people know and understand this topic because it is something that some people have to go through.

  5. I'm choosing to talk about the Abortion presentation. I thought all the presentations were interesting, but I feel that I could give the most feedback on this particular one. I feel that he is at a good starting point. However, I think he could expand his argument so much more. I feel that his paper/ presentation needs more sources and evidence to back him up. It also might add to the argument to find the stories and statistics about the outcomes of people in these kinds of situations. Find out what happens to women later on who had the procedures. Did they end up having successful lives? Find some first hand accounts of these kinds of situation to add a more personal aspect. You could also look into what often happens to children born to mothers who opted not to have an abortion but later had to give the child up. Were these kids adopted or put into worse situations? How do they (and the mothers) end up? This is a very controversial topic, so I think you need to do as much research as you can.

  6. The presentation that was the most convincing and controversial of the presentations on Friday was the one on drug legalization. This argument was that as long as no one is getting hurt by the drug use other than the person using the drug why is it not legal. This was backed up by the senator saying that he thinks freedom should be protected. I agree with this argument that drug use should be legal because the government should not have a say in what people want to put into their own bodies as long as the said person is not harming others. And the government’s mandates on drug use do not reflect the social norms of today such as marijuana. Maybe if at all possible to find a statistic that illustrates the amount of marijuana use in the country ought to show the complete disregard for social practices from the government. I also agree with the senator since just because something is legal doesn’t mean that most people would go out and do it. Along with the fact that if it is legal then the government could tax it. Another suggestion I would have about this paper is to not concentrate fully on all drugs because there are different levels of addiction and effect from all the illegal drugs. But, a more concise paper about the legalization of one or two drugs that do similar effects should be grouped together instead of just saying all the illegal drugs should be legal. Especially since there are drugs like PCP which increase aggression and is known to lead to violent behavior while on it. When comparing PCP with an illegal drug like marijuana it makes the latter seem almost timid and not destructive of one’s self as much.

  7. Since my presentation was today I think that mine is pretty interesting but I know that is not the purpose of this blog post.

I also found the presentation about drug legalization to be very interesting. I chose to write about this one instead of the abortion presentation because I felt that it had more substance to it. The abortion presentation did not show many supportive facts and more wanted advice for the topic. On the other hand, Paul had some great supporting facts that will help his argument as well as persuasive visual tools. I especially liked the video he had from Ron Paul. I think that, like he said, he can elaborate on Ron Paul's thoughts and ideas about drug legalization and control. I wish that his link with all of the statistics and numbers would have worked. I think it would have been a great supportive resource to help people with the believing game.

I would suggest a few things to Paul when finishing up his paper. I suggest that Paul look into the specifics of the regulation that the Government will implement to help push the people that are on the edge of persuasion to his side. I also suggest that he take Ron Paul's ideas from the video and his campaigning and develop them into what he thinks is best for the country. Make sure to keep presenting it in a factual way so that it is promoting the believing game.

Overall, I think that this is a great topic and has a lot of directions that you could go in the supportive facts. Paul chose a great angle by bringing in the political views. We have learned so much in this class about the different candidates therefore I thought it was interesting to focus on a candidate that we have not studied.

  8. Sara’s presentation on technology addiction stood out to me the most. So far, I feel she had the best presentation. What I liked most about her presentation was that I could relate to her topic. I find myself relying on my iPhone a lot. I realized grabbing for my phone seems to be a habit now. I’m constantly checking to see if I have any new notifications. The presentation also taught me something new called “phantom vibrations” which is the feeling of your phone vibrating even when its not. This is also something I’ve experienced before I just didn’t know it happened to other people and I didn’t expect it to have a name. Sara made good eye contact during her presentation but at certain times she failed to keep the attention of her audience. She was really familiar with her topic and able to talk about it with confidence and did a great job elaborating on her bullet points. Although, she did spend too much time on certain points and exceeded her time limit. She made an excellent choice for visual aid, it helped the audience fully understand exactly what her topic was. I thought the video clip was cute and funny and served as a great learning tool. One thing that was unclear to me was her actually argument, so my advice to her would be to better state her argument. Overall, she had a great presentation, and seems to be on the right track to completing her paper.

  9. The argument concerning technology addiction is the most interesting because it's the most relevant to all people in our society. Compared to abortion or other major issues, almost everybody actually experiences or interacts with technology on a daily or weekly basis. I find this increasingly interesting because of the realization that there are so many degrees and varieties of ways in which one can be addicted to certain types of technology (cell phones, web browsing, video games, texting, social media, television, movies, etc). People are not limited to being addicted to one individual device or service; each becomes more easily accessible as time progresses. I think this essay needs to examine the differences in user demographics. For example, how do seniors 65 years and older compare internet use to adults 40-65 or how do blue collar workers compare to white collar workers? Overgeneralization of demographic statistics creates a weaker argument overall. It would be interesting to see how these age groups relate to the concept of technology addiction. I think explaining where exactly these statistics come from could also strengthen the argument. Unlike government departments such as the Census Bureau, these statistics come from lesser-known agencies and I would personally question their legitimacy. Show me the money.

  10. I thought Sara’s presentation about technology and our dependency on it was very interesting and also very truthful. She elaborated on how frequently people of our age group utilize the many different types of technology presented to us. I also thought this was the most relevant topic; while abortion is a very prominent issue in today’s society, it most likely has not impacted that many people in our class. On the other hand, I’m sure that everyone who listened to the presentation is affected by technology in some way or another. I did not actually think about how much time I spend on my computer or phone before I looked at the facts on her PowerPoint. I quickly came to the realization that I need to cut back on how much I use my computer. I also admired the part of the presentation where we were asked to place our cell phones in the bowl. I think it really drove her point home because we were free of distraction and could more effectively listen to what she had to say.

  11. I found the technology inquiry presentation very interesting. Sara did the technology presentation. This presentation was asking the question “Is all of our focus on technology these days helping or hurting us?” I found this question relatable because this issue is so controversial and relatable. There is new technology that is coming out everyday. Our children these days do not know what it is like without the world of technology consuming their lives. I found this aggravating. My favorite childhood memories have to do outside; like camping, hiking, swimming. I went on an adventure with friends outside almost everyday that are where I learned about myself, friends, and really just how to grow up. I feel like children these days don’t take advantage of this opportunity of the outdoors and being creative in that manner, because they have games right at their hands where they don’t have to move a muscle to play. I agree that it is making our society lazy. But, on the other hand, I think Sara made a great point by explaining and showing the facts how well our society has come and progressed throughout the years, and this could not be possible without the help and use of technology. It is hard to put a yes or no answer to her question. I think she did a great job addressing this in her presentation. My favorite part was how she asked for us to put our source of technology into a bowl, and at the end of class asked us how many times we thought about it. I can honestly answer that I did think about my phone a couple times. It really put things in perspective. I think that technology is great and helps our society so much, but I think it needs to be done in moderation.

  12. The technology inquiry presentation that Sarah did today was very interesting. she is looking to see if technology is going to help us or be our downfall. I see why this is a big ideology. When I was little I loved to play outside, but when I would want to come inside my mom would not let me and make me stay outside. It was confusing to me because I did not understand, but now looking at children I see why. You see 5 and 6 year old's holding their own cell phones these days and they usually know more about the phones than there parents. Technology is definitely taking advantage of what they can. I think it is interesting though because looking into the future it may be a good thing to have children using technology at a young age, but It does take away from the outdoors somewhat. It is an interesting subject and I am glad that I got to listen to her ideas.
